Yesterday was a big day because we gave Dad a shave and fully combed his hair and he cut his finger nails. He asked for a mirror and was pretty happy with result. But not up to photos yet. he had a we had visits from three people Russian Jane, Loudmilla the Home Health aide (the Russian parade continues) and Helen who runs a small home carer business.
Jane came at 11 and dad was sitting up in the den and she was impressed, said yes You are looking a lot better. She last saw him on Thursday. She told dad he is definitely improving but he needs to be patient, at his age it takes much longer to get over things. His lung infection is not quite gone, he has to avoid doing so much that he gets fatigued, so frequent naps are good, just keep up the medication routines and drink drink drink. Martinellis and Mom cannot believe the change. Jane taught us a new Russian word "Da" this is a good word, better than "nyet". The second visitor Ludmilla came around 1 to give Dad a bath. This visit was not so successful and although dad admitted after she had gone that he felt cleaner, he did not like the experience and he let her know right through. He was not keen to get into the shower so she did everything on the bed and in a chair. She was short and chunky, looked very strong and was very authoritarian, I think I have seen her in a few movies playing the part of a scary Russian. Dad was fully clashing with her after not very long. The worst was washing his hair which seriously needed washing. She had dad hold a wash basin and she played a bowl of war water over his head, not once but twice. Whoa! when she was finally done he said well I won't be going through that again. She took it in her stride and plans to come back on Thursday.
Our third visitor was Helen who is the first one of the people Linda has contacted about day time or 24hour live in careers. All the people we are talking to have helped other families that Mom and Dad know. Helen was wonderful, but the service is incredibly expensive. Approx 600/day for the 24 hour service. Both Noni and Gramps can add and have managed their own money all their lives. I cannot imagine that they would be willing to pay that kind of money even if it was only daytime hours. It would make them feel sick.
