Friday the 13th came and went with only minor drama that got respolved and some good big things achieved. In the morning we finally the had two plumbers arrive from Southwood Plumbing, Dennis who worked on the upstairs bathroom and Mark who was in charge of installing a new water saving toilet in the downstairs toilet. The city offered these new toilets to anyone who was willing to pay for their installation. So Martinellis ordered two but it was never going to fit the upstairs toilet. The old downstairs toilet had been installed by Gramps and his Dad in the 60's and Gramps said they had no idea what they were doing. Mark commented on it when he was taking it out, said it had been put in in an odd way. But I guess it was good enough as it has done its duty all these years. I was surprised to find that it was not a dual flush, just a low flush. The plumber said that dual flush are not that common. Upstairs Dennis was working his way through the many problems_leakage in the shower, the plug leaver in the bathtub at no longer worked, the handles in the sink and the biggest problem, the toilet, which was still running and could not be shut off. He managed to get through all of that without too much trouble. The new toilet for the upstairs space has now been ordered and that should get resolved next week. Dennis is also going to do a bit more work on the handles in the shower (hooray, hate those handles) and will bring those when he comes with the toilet. So Gramps was very happy with all of that. I have the job of calling the water company today to see if they can adjust the $300 bill from last month.
In the afternoon we had a visit from Jane who you will see in the photo. She was very pleased to see Dad looking so well and told him a few times during the visit, "you are not a hospice guy". She had equipment with her to take a blood sample to check his INR levels, have no idea what this means but has to do with blood viscosity. Gramps was getting this done regularly as one of his medications is for cloud thinning. She was alarmed by the reading and got into a bit of a flap because the VA had never sent her Dads records so she had no way of knowing if that reading was normal for him. so we spent the next 45 minutes with Gramps and I looking for the last report Dad had, hoping it was not among the papers Dad had tossed, and Linda trying to get someone from the VA Coagulant Clinic on the phone to get advice. This got resolved positively but we all had to have a sit down after that. Gramps was calm through the whole thing and Jane kept commenting on that too.
Approaching dinner time Noni asked me to cook something for her, sausage, onion and brussel sprouts. She did give me a few instructions but mostly left me to it. She had French toast in mind for gramps.
Linda and I had an invitation to dinner at David Sciandri husband of Linda's best friend Pia, who died suddenly last year. The dinner was with all of Pia's good friends and David had cooked all of the courses. HIs daughter Julie was his helper. Noni and Gramps were heading for bed when we got home and had managed everything on their own. Happy days.
